Tabu was born on 4th November 1970 to Jamal Hashmi and Rizwana in Hyderabad. She attended the St. Anns high school in Hyderabad and later at St. Xavier's College Mumbai. Taabu is the niece of veteran actress Shabana Azmi and younger sister of another actress Farah Naaz.
Tabu first faced the camera as a child artist in ‘Hum Naujawan’ as Dev Anand’s daughter. She was next signed in 1987 by Boney Kapoor for ‘Prem’ opposite Sanjay Kapoor, the film was released in 1995 after a delay of 8 years. Tabu was first seen as an actress in Telugu film ‘Coolie No. 1’. Her first bollywood film ‘Pehla Pehla Pyar’ went unnoticed; however she received the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award for her next release ‘Vijaypath’ opposite Ajay Devgan.
Tabu starred in commercially successful movies ‘Saajan Chale Sasural’ alongside Govinda and Karisma Kapooer and ‘Jeet’ alongside Sunny Deol. Tabu was nominated for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her special appearance in ‘Jeet’. The critically acclaimed ‘Maachis’ earned her the prestigious ‘National Film Award for Best Actress’ for her phenomenal portrayal of a Punjabi woman. In 1997, Tabu appeared in J.P. Dutta’s 1971 Indo-Pak war epic ‘Border’ opposite Sunny Deol. Tabu garnered the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance for her exemplary performance in mega hit ‘Virasat’ opposite Anil Kapoor.
Tabu was seen in supporting roles in commercially successful movies like Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United’ and David Dhawan’s ‘Biwi No. 1’. Her success stride continued with the box office hit ‘Hera Pheri’ and critically acclaimed Astitiva for which she received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance.
In the year 2001, Tabu gave a riveting performance in Madhur Bhandarkar’s National Award winner ‘Chandni Bar’ based on the life of bar dancers in Mumbai. Tabu won her second National Film Award for Best Actress for ‘Chandni Bar’. Tabu has also appeared in Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Maqbool’ which was the Indian adaptation of William Shakespeare's Macbeth. The film was premiered at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival and received rave reviews.
Tabu has also starred alongside Aamir Khan and Kajol in Kunal Kohli’s mega hit ‘Fanaa’ and ‘Cheeni Kum’ opposite Amitabh Bachchan. Her first Hollywood film ‘The Namesake’ released in 2007. Directed by renowned filmmaker Mira Nair, ‘The Namesake’ was a big hit in overseas markets and earned huge critical acclaim.
Tabu has worked in several super hit Telugu films including ‘Coolie No. 1’, ‘Sisindri’, ‘Ninne Pelladatha’, ‘Aavida Maa Aavide’, ‘Chennakeshava Reddy’, ‘Andarivaadu’ and ‘Pandurangadu’. Besides winning two National Awards and 5 Filmfare Awards in Bollywood, she has also garnered Filmfare Best Actress Award (Tamil) for ‘Kadhal Desam’ and Filmfare Best Actress Award (Telugu) for ‘Ninne Pelladatha’.
Tabu recently appeared on the cover of Vogue India's January 2009 issue. Tabu’s forthcoming films include ‘Season’s Greetings’ and ‘The Legend of Kunal’.
